National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a top-level academic centre combining research and mental health care, located near Prague, Czech Republic. NIMH programme is focused on researching psychological and neurobiological mechanisms that could have negative effects on quality of life and potentially lead to development of severe mental disorders such as stress reactions, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. Research also includes development and testing of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Our approach is based upon interconnection of methods of molecular biology, animal modelling, evolutionary psychology, and clinical research. NIMH is meant to become national reference institution for the field of mental health.

Position title: Research Associate


Position description

NIMH opens a position of Research Associate within the Evolutionary and Social perception work group, led by Dr. Jan Havlíček. The group’s research focuses on various aspects of impression formation based on olfactory and visual cues, primarily in the context of mate choice, intrasexual competitiveness, and family relationships. The relevant psychological mechanisms are studied across mental health spectrum. The successful applicant is expected to run research within the field of social perception and related to the research objectives of the work group. The position requires expert knowledge in at least one of the following areas: experimental psychology, biological anthropology, medicine, psychiatry, or neuroscience.

Position opens: October, 2016

Position type: full time

Starting salary: within a range of 28 000–36 000 CZK/month; commensurate with academic experience. Seasonal and performance-related bonuses not included. Further granting available.

The post is tenable for two years, extension possible. New entrants to the Institute will be required to serve a probationary period of 3 months.



  • Independent conduction of research in conjunction with the head of the research group. This specifically involves outlining research design, data collection and their analysis.
  • Regular publication of research results primarily in academic journals.
  • Collaboration on proposals to secure funding to support future research.
  • Contribution to the presentation of the research outcomes at the relevant academic meetings.
  • Cooperation with colleagues both within the Institute and also on the international level.
  • Sharing one’s expertise and mentoring junior members of the team.
  • Keeping up to date knowledge and learning new research skills as required.



The successful candidate will need to demonstrate vast research experience within the respective academic field.



  • PhD in experimental psychology, biological anthropology, psychiatry, neuroscience, or in a related academic field. Exceptional applicants working towards their PhD would be considered as well.
  • Extensive experience with academic publishing.
  • Professional knowledge of quantitative data analysis (e.g., SPSS, R, Mplus).
  • Fluent in English language (C1 level or higher).



  • Knowledge of research techniques such as olfactory perception, eye-tracking, brain imaging, biometry, hormonal assays, and survey development.
  • Mastering of specialist IT techniques for face analysis and/or visualisation (e.g., GMM, Psychomorph).
